Constellations are massive, highly intelligent creatures that exist in Light Scar. They exist exclusively in outer space and are responsible for the creation of Interstellar Leylines as they use them to travel across the stars.
Appearance
Constellations look like a collection of stars, asteroids, and other space debris contained inside an invisible body. They tend to appear in the shape of naturally magical creatures. Reported sightings of Constellations describe them as a fox, goat, fairy, and sometimes a human to name a few. Despite this comparison, they have no distinct features outside of the general shape of the mentioned creature. They seem capable of changing shape at will, as they will sometimes have additional features like horns, extra limbs, and other bodily designs that make no sense to terrestrial beings.
Constellations are roughly the same size as a planet once fully matured. Constellations reproduce asexually by detaching small parts of themselves, leaving them to have no definite minimum size. This makes them the second largest creature in the Light Scar dimension.
Society/Behavior
Constellations don’t seem to have any defined society despite their high intelligence. They are capable of communication through the manipulation of different wavelengths. As long as a signal is exposed to outer space or the edge of a planet’s atmosphere, a Constellation can speak through radio, intercom, etc. This led to the discovery that they are extremely curious beings, simply searching for new things throughout the universe. They create magical highways through Leylines in order to enable other Constellations to share in the wonders they find or avoid hazardous locations.
Sometimes, a Constellation will observe a particular planet for an extended period of time. This could be a method of obtaining this intelligence by observing the planet’s inhabitants and natural events.
Threat
Cognitive Interference
The strange, nonsense bodily features some Constellations possess can cause headaches, extreme emotional swings, and further unwanted but temporary mental disturbances. As long as these features are not being perceived by the naked eye, they are harmless.
Planetary Disturbance
Mature Constellations are never a threat to terrestrial life in this way. However, hapless young Constellations can get caught in a planet’s atmosphere and pulled down to its surface.
During this descent the Constellation will burn up in the atmosphere, leaving them extremely injured on impact. This impact causes large-scale destruction and possibly wipes out entire worlds. Not being accustomed to gravity, their body is now being crushed and burned. The Constellation enters a fight or flight state in its final moments that could cause further destruction.
The decomposition of their bodies causes an increased saturation of mana on the planet. There are currently no known methods of preventing these events.
Trivia
- Jereia’s Four Seas are implied to be heavily affected by a Constellation impact. Increased mana saturation in the water and the lack of a central landmass could mean a larger continent was destroyed by the impact. The Constellation then died within its waters.
- Based on its history, The Epicenter could be the final resting place of this Constellation.
- Since they exist in space, it’s possible that Constellations have no sense of smell, hearing, or taste. Assuming this has a similar heightening effect as it would for terrestrial creatures, they may have exceptional eyesight and an extremely sensitive sense of touch.
